We all know temptations of the normal kind. These are what I call the “I don’t smoke drink or chew or run with women who do” temptations. It is these normal temptations of man that are left to the minor minions of the evil one. For the most part these are the temptations that take some discipline but mostly some walking-way to get under control. But the temptation of Jesus in the desert shows us the face of tuff temptation. This is the kind of temptation that the master tempter brings in person.
In the tuff temptation, the master temper causes us to question what life is all about. His desire is to get us to question the nature and kindness of God. His ploy is to get us to move to immediate satisfaction and forgo any future suffering. If Jesus had taken the easy route we all would have been doomed for eternity. This focus on the moment, to dim the desire of eternity, is the most damning temptation of all.
