The Decline and Fall of Christian America
04/08/2009

It is official! Newsweek has proclaimed, “The decline and fall of Christian America.” Jon Meacham says, “The Christian God is not dead in American life, but he is less of a force in our politics and culture than at any other time in recent memory.” Dr. R. Albert Mohler Jr. – president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, is quoted in the article saying, “The so-called Judeo-Christian consensus of the last millennium has given way to a post-modern, post-Christian, post-Western cultural crisis which threatens the very heart of our culture.” To say that we are in a post-Christian state as a nation is not to say that people are not spiritual, but that we will glorify the individual to the point that one’s personal experience of the divine becomes one’s religion apart from any external standards. In a de-facto sense, this becomes nothing more than polytheism. I don’t foresee a future in which we have shrines of wood and metal setup on street corners. But, the shrines of individual thought, in the post-Christian age, will have to be bowed down to or one will be burned at stake on the planks of ancient truths like the Word of God.

The larger struggle in the post-Christian world is that the church is being pushed to the side with the argument that anyone that does not adhere to the new faith of individualism is arrogant at best and bigoted at worst. The reality is that the new polytheism cannot stand in the light of logic and history. There cannot be logic when every idea must be weighed as on equal par with every other idea. Think with me through this matter.

You desire to build your dream house. I come to you as a contractor to bid for the construction of your house. In the midst of our discussions I inform you that I am a very open minded, progressive building contractor. I tell you, “In my open mindedness and desire not to violate the freedom of any of my laborer’s conscience I leave decisions of standards up to them. Some of my builders read a tape measure and say, “Two inches plus two inches equal four inches.” But some might add two plus two and get five. And others will add two plus two and get three.”

Do I get the job to build your dream house? Logic dictates that all thoughts cannot be of equal value in the matters of truth or rightness. One cannot have up equal to down, or left equal to right. But this is the shrine of post-Christian polytheistic spritualism to which we are asked to bow down. Gather the wood, light the fires, I will have to be burn alive upon the ancient truths.

Your servant,
Bro. Jim
